Yesterday, John Parker was exposed to his newest bad dream. John says the only things he could possibly be dreaming about right now is milk. Smiling in his sleep when he's getting plenty of milk and frowning in his sleep when there is a shortage. Now he will frown in his sleep thinking about those shots.
When he was a newborn in the hospital, his foot had to be pricked every day, sometimes twice daily, to check his bilirubin levels. He never whimpered for more than a second with each prick and we just knew he was the first baby ever born that never cries. Over the last 8 weeks, we have determined that no such baby exists, and I was truly worried about exposing him to the painful shots. It was pitiful.. he was sitting in my lap, dosing, when suddenly he had to be stuck with 3 needles! He cried for 5 minutes or so, then finally relaxed. The whole day (and night) was a mixture of sleeping and crying, which was hard for us because he is not typically a fussy baby. I don't want to go through that again, and I am already dreading the next appointment at 4 months.
In other news, he weighed 9 pounds 9 ounces (10th percentile) and was 22 1/2 inches (25th percentile) - he has grown nearly 3 pounds and 3 inches since his two week visit (at that visit he was back to birth weight - 6 pounds 11 ounces and 19 3/4 inches). Although he is small, our pediatrician was happy with his weight gain and said this was an exceptional weight gain for an exclusively breast-fed baby. So we are doing something right :)
